Sue Lynch Smith, Statesboro, GA., was born in Bowling Green, Kentucky, on September 9, 1935 and died September 15, 2026. Her husband of 57 years, Tom D. Smith, died on October 4, 2013.
She earned degrees from Western Kentucky University and Indiana State University, followed by teaching Home Economics for 3 years in Indiana, then taught Home economics and Interior Design for 27 years at Georgia Southern University.
Sue was blessed with two daughters, Julie Smith Dempsey (Cal) of Barnwell, SC, and Cynthia Smith Waters (Adam) of Statesboro, GA. There are 6 grandchildren: Tommy Watkins (Sally), Neal Watkins, Abby Watkins Murphy (Tyler), Rachel Watkins, Ryan Waters (Alison), and Ross Waters (Emily). Sue had 13 great-grandchildren.
She had a lifelong dream of travel that was realized between 1988 and 2018 when she visited 67 countries around the world and many sites in the United States.
Sue supported many charitable organizations such as Habitat for Humanity, Bulloch County Historical Society, National Trust for Historic Preservation, the Georgia Trust, and the Averitt Center for the Arts in Statesboro, Statesboro Bicentennial Committee, Area Christians Together in Service, and was a member of the Hoe and Hope Garden Club.
She was a member of Pittman Park Methodist Church. A family graveside service is planned for Wednesday, September 23, 2026 at 11 AM. In lieu of flowers, please contribute to your choice of one of the charitable organizations listed above.
