Born and raised in Miles City, Montana. He loved the great outdoors including fishing, hunting, and working outside in his woodshop. After high school he pursued a career in Military starting with the Navy then transferring to the Army. Phillip was a highly decorated soldier. He served as a Special Forces Medic having completed his first combat mission in The Republic of Congo, Central Africa and two tours of Vietnam with the 5th, 7th, and 10th Groups. He was awarded three purple hearts, a silver star, three bronze stars and numerous other accommodation metals. After his time with Special Forces, he continued his career at Fort Sam Houston at Brook Army Hospital Burn Center. There he served as a 91 Charlie / LVN (licensed vocational nurse), a Licensed Respiratory Therapist, and as a Flight Paramedic. As a NOIC (non - commissioned officer in charge) of the Burn Center he flew all over the US caring for the most severe burn patients via helicopter transport. In 1979 he was chosen to attend Physical Assisted School through the United Staes Airforce at Sheppard Airforce Base. While there he found his passion for Emergency / Trauma Medicine. After his retirement, he continued to serve at Blanchfield Army Community Hospital in the ER and later became a Flight Surgeon for the 160th at Fort Campbell. He truly embraced taking care of the worst of the worst patients. He was always prepared as he believed in continuing education to keep his skillset sharp and to stay current with the newest medical technology. He was a profoundly proud veteran whose years of service and sacrifice is an honorable legacy for our family.
He always had great stories telling of his childhood to stories of serving abroad in the Military. He enjoyed studying the Bible and building furniture keepsakes for the family. His compassion for others is unmatched always giving to others in need.
Survived by his lovely wife Pam Volkert of nearly 60 years of marriage, his children Phillip (Deanne), Mathew (Carlett), Tanya, Aaron (Karen), and eight grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. Family meant everything to Phillip and he was so proud of his children and grandchildren’s accomplishments. He was always available with words of encouragement, wisdom, and a lending hand.
