Elizabeth Blaes

January 3, 1939 – August 9, 2026

Elizabeth Blaes, a beloved sister, aunt, great-aunt, and friend, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Sunday morning, August 9, 2026, under the compassionate care of Ogeechee Area Hospice and All Ways Caring Home Care.

Elizabeth was preceded in death by her parents, August and Hilda Zamminer; her beloved husband, Martin George Blaes; her brother-in-law, Charles Thomas Papenhausen; and her sister, Joyce Vera Papenhausen.

She is survived by her brother, William Zamminer; niece, Joyceann M. Squires (John Dewey); nephew, Charles T. Papenhausen II (Francis Rose); great-nephew, Martin J. Blaes Jr. (Sabrina E.); great-nieces, Angel M. Blaes-Dyches and Dana N. Papenhausen; great-nephew, Bradley C. Papenhausen; and great-great-nieces and nephews, Martin Jay Blaes III, Alexis Savannah Blaes, Kyra Brooke Dyches, Silas Roy Bryson, and Ansley Graces Squires, to whom she was affectionately known as “Grandma Liz.”

Elizabeth was born in Brooklyn, New York, and spent much of her early life in Bellerose, New York. She later made Bulloch County, Georgia, her home, where she lived for the last 25 years of her life.

In her younger years, Elizabeth worked in Manhattan’s clothing district and as a switchboard operator. She later worked in the family-owned grocery store and delicatessen, Bill’s Delicatessen, as a food service worker.

Elizabeth was a selfless and devoted person who sacrificed much of her youth to help raise her niece and nephew after their father passed away while their mother worked. On October 26, 1974, she married her husband, Martin George Blaes, and moved to New Hampshire, where she worked on an assembly line and as a sales clerk.

Elizabeth had a lifelong love for animals. She supported numerous animal shelters and rescue organizations and was a member of the ASPCA. Her compassion extended to animals and people alike, and she will be remembered for the love and care she gave to those around her.

Elizabeth lived with several chronic health conditions but remained surrounded by love and care. Special thanks are extended to Cortney, Jamie, Liz, Jarissa, Savannah, Rami, and Savannah Reid for the love, care, kindness, and laughter they brought to Elizabeth during each and every visit.

Elizabeth loved the Lord and was a member of New Hope Global Methodist Church. Her faith was an important part of her life, and she will be remembered for the love she shared with her family and the many lives she touched.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made to Ogeechee Area Hospice and/or New Hope Global Methodist Church in Elizabeth’s memory.

Elizabeth will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
