The youngest of 3 boys, Charles was born to the late Charles R. Millican, Sr. and Mable Ruth Townes Millican of Silver Creek, Georgia. While growing up, he worked in his father's market, took piano and voice lessons and played football in high school. Following a brief time in the Navy at the end of WWII, Charles enrolled in Georgia Teachers College, now Georgia Southern University, where he earned a Bachelors of Science in Education, majoring in physical education and minoring in Math. Later, Charles also earned a Masters of Arts in Education Administration from Peabody College in Nashville Tennessee. While in college in Statesboro, Charles met the love of his life, Carolyn Bohler. They dated while he completed his undergraduate degree. Charles and Carolyn married on September 1st, 1950, following his graduation, and the adventure began!
During their first few years of marriage, Charles and Carolyn moved around Georgia a bit. Charles was coaching football and teaching math. After a few years they settled in Chipley, FL. While there, Charles had quite a successful coaching career, with winning seasons and numerous coaching awards and honors. In Marianna, Florida, he took a floundering football program from 2-3 years of losing seasons to a record of 7-3 in just 2 years. During those early years, he also coached basketball, umpired for little league baseball, and taught swimming lessons. From Marianna, Charles took his family to Branford, Florida, where he served as the principal of the K-12 school from 1971 until he retired in 1982.
Charles was not only a talented athlete but also a gifted musician with a beautiful, tenor voice, which he used much of his adult life. He and Carolyn were very active in a community theater group in Chipley, the Spanish Trail Playhouse, which is still alive today. He also sang in his church choir and sang solos on occasion.
Charles was a proud member of the Live Oak (FL) Shrine Club and the Masonic Lodge of Branford, FL. He was recently recognized by the Masons for having more than 60 years of perpetual service.
Following his retirement, Charles and Carolyn went out west, where he worked with his son-in-law's company, GeoSearch, as a "landman". After his wife retired, they returned to Bulloch County, residing on the farm where Carolyn grew up. During their retirement years, they enjoyed traveling, taking cruises, and supporting Georgia Southern University sports.
During his many years in education, Charles is credited with having a positive influence by countless former students. Many of these former students can recount ways he went above and beyond to help through difficult situations.
